Brookings, Oregon is located in Curry County along the southern coast of the state. Just six miles north of the California border along U.S. Highway 101, Brookings is bound by the Chetco River and Port of Brookings Harbor to the south and Harris Beach State Park to the north.

HISTORY

In 1902, William James Ward, a forestry civil engineer recommended securing a town site and extensive lumbering operations in Brookings including a mill and shipping center. John E. Brookings hired renowned architect Bernard Maybeck in 1913 to lay out the street design for the city’s core. Brookings was incorporated in 1951 and has grown into the county’s largest city. The growth was spurred largely by the area’s mild climate, beautiful coastline and scenic/recreational amenities.


CLIMATE

Curry County experiences a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with summer temperatures in the high 60s and winter lows around 40 degrees. The landscape is lush and green with the area receiving 78 inches of rain per year, giving it the feel of a rainforest. There is also 191 days of sunshine with minimal snowfall of just one inch annually.

AMENITIES

Brookings includes three schools offering primary and secondary education within the Brookings-Harbor School District. Private schooling is available at Brookings Harbor Christian School. Southwestern Oregon Community College offers courses at the Curry Campus in Brookings.
